The Winnipeg Alphabestiary

TIM SCHOUTEN

Congratulations to Tim Schouten for his contribution of....H for Horse!
The magazine, Boarder Crossings commissioned twenty-six enchanting works of art from some of Winnipeg's most accomplished artists to create a book celebrating the magazine's 25th anniversary. The creatures featured in the alphabestiary collection demonstrate honesty and imagination in their rendering. From Wanda Koop's A for Ape to Shaun Morin's Z for Zebra, the animals that dwell in the pages of the alphabestiary challenge, conjure and inspire.

The Winnipeg Alphabestiary will be launched in Winnipeg at McNally Robinson Grant Park on Wednesday, November 26th and later in New York at McNally Jackson. The Winnipeg Alphabestiary was also launched during the Toronto International Art Fair (October 2-6, 2008) at David Mirvish Books.

Tenuous (catalogue)

TINA MARTEL

Congratulations to Tina Martel on her installation entitled, Tenuous, sponsored by the Prairie Art Gallery. The work was created from July 3 through July 20, 2008 in Grande Prairie, Alberta. During this time the artist worked with a team of staff and volunteers to reconstruct the iconic Alberta pick up truck in hand made paper creating a metaphor for our fragile environment and culture. The outside installation site encouraged people to visit, observe the process and talk about the ideas behind the piece. Following the installation the cast was dissolved and recycled into flat sheets of paper to be used in a future series of paintings. The only physical evidence of its existence will be in the video, audio and photographic documentation.

A catalogue of the exhibition, forward by Eric Cameron and essay by Sarah Alford, will be available through the Prairie Art Gallery, info@prairiegallery.com at the end of October 2008.

STUDIO ALBERTA

June 28 – July 13, 2008 Liverpool, England
August 21 – September 13, 2008 Calgary, Alberta

On June 28, Studio Alberta opened at 11 Wolstenholme Square in Liverpool, England and featured the collaborative efforts of Carl White, Laurie Steen, Keith Diamond, Michael Jones and Mark Holliday*. Studio Alberta was curated by Donna Chyz and was part of Liverpool 2008 - European Capital of Culture.
*(represented by Paul Kuhn Gallery)

Centering on the intimate relationship between art and life and the duality of homeland and memory, each artist explored their connections to England and Canada, whether by their birth or immigration of family. In mediums ranging from beeswax and digital imagery, oils, graphite over panel, to film or print, the body of work created a lively dialog of how remembrance of time and place evolve and deepen with experience and reflection of self.

Studio Alberta celebrated its second opening on August 21 as it returned to Calgary and opened along side several artists from Wolstenholme Projects in Liverpool, England.
